On 7 April, mayor of Siena Italy made a special appointment to meet Qi Lei and showed his gratitude on social network website. The mayor said on the website, ‘doctor Qi Lei from affiliated hospital of Nantong University came to municipal government and donated various types of personal protective equipment (gloves and masks). We thank him for his work in coronavirus control and prevention. Qi Lei stays in Siena in the present, his wife stays in Nantong.’

‘It is my second time to come to Siena. I have deep feelings for Siena. As the only Chinese doctor who stays in Siena now, I will do my best to help Siena citizens, medical workers and patients of Siena University hospital.’ Qi Lei said when he met the mayor on 7 April.

41 year old Qi Lei is a deputy director in emergency department of Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University. In June 2018, in the progress of postgraduate study in internal medicine (Respiratory diseases) in Nanjing Medical School, he won a chance to study in Siena University Hospital in Italy for his excellent academic performance. In 2019, after he graduated, he won a chance to study in Siena University Hospital in Italy from Jiangsu Commission of Health again. In December 2019, Qi Lei reached Italy for the second time.

As the epidemic is spreading fast in Italy, in Siena University Hospital where Qi Lei studies, the intensive care units are overloaded. Having no choice, the hospital uses the whole emergency building to treat patients.

During the period, Qi Lei has recommended the latest Chinese epidemic control guide to Siena University Hospital for several times, shared the successful epidemic control experiences of China with staff of Siena University Hospital, introduced measures such as home isolation, hand disinfection, wearing masks outside and keeping of social distance to policemen on duty and neighbors.
